We are seeking a highly talented data scientist to join our PHC Data, Analytics and Imaging group. You will collaborate with peers within and outside the function located around the world to develop evidence generation strategies, identify evidence gaps, design and execute studies, implement analyses and develop algorithms that support our PHC product portfolio. These will be used to inform the research and development of our PHC integrated solutions that will be used to facilitate healthcare decisions by patients, physicians, health authorities, payers, and policy-makers. This will require a deep understanding of the patient journey in specific disease areas, of the inner workings of healthcare environments, as well as strong scientific and technical data science expertise. Source data will be diverse - clinical, imaging (clinical imaging, digital pathology), -omics (RNASeq, spatial transcriptomics, genomics, GWAS), and/or digital (wearables, sensors) data, all potentially coming from trials or from the real world, including from patient registries, electronic medical records, claims, and biobanks. You will need strong strategic, collaboration and communication skills, as well as a visionary mindset, to transform the way we use data and analytics to develop and deliver solutions for our patients.


Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal data scientists and external vendors to derive and validate novel biomarkers and algorithms in support of the PHC product portfolio

  • Apply your scientific, data management, statistical and machine learning (including deep learning) knowledge to a wide range of oncology, pathology, neuroscience, and ophthalmology ‘big data’ assets to complete tasks ranging from endpoint development and outcome prediction to software development and scientific data transfers.

  • Collaborate with data management teams to deploy, maintain and integrate computational solutions

  • Identify and gain access to external RWD data sources

  • Curate/clean/organize large clinical, imaging, -omics or digital/sensors/wearables datasets

  • Develop a comprehensive and deep understanding of the data we work with and foster learning with colleagues using analytical tools and applications to broaden data accessibility and advance our proficiency/efficiency in understanding and using the data appropriately

  • Stay current with and adopt emergent analytical methodologies, tools and applications to ensure fit-for-purpose and impactful approaches.


Required skills:

  • MS in quantitative field (e.g. mathematics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, EE, Biomedical/Bioengineering, etc.), and/or adv. Life Sciences degree with significant computational experience. PhD is a plus

  • Understanding of end-to-end ML/DL/AI development steps like data engineering, computing/storage resource budgeting, model training, model selection and model evaluation.

  • Experienced with Machine Learning algorithms such as Penalized Linear Models, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Machines, Neural Networks, and/or experienced with Deep Learning frameworks (Tensorflow, Pytorch, Keras) and modern architectures. Working knowledge of the inferential statistical analysis on controlled experiment or observational data is a plus.

  • Experienced with regulatory requirements for SaMD and evidence generation for clinical validity and utility of algorithm-based SaMD products a (big) plus

  • Proven track record of developing and executing data science research projects, patient-level data analyses and/or clinical algorithm development and validation (based on RNASeq, genomics, imaging, real world data, surveys, clinical trials, registries, claims) with publications and presentations.

  • Experienced in Python or R (polyglot in multiple programming languages a plus).

  • Experienced in using scientific computing environments in unix / linux in an enterprise cluster on premises or in cloud.

  • Demonstrated experience with managing project scope and driving delivery in an evolving environment requiring proactivity and effective problem-solving and prioritization when faced with challenges

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Intrinsically motivated with a commitment to accuracy and quality

  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset and self-direction, ability to teach others and willingness to learn new techniques

Specific skills required for this position:

In addition to the before mentioned general data science skills, the position of Senior Data Scientist in Digital Pathology requires:

  • at least 3 years in project leadership positions in R&D/ product development in Pharma or Diagnostics, including a solid experience in matrix leadership

  • Strong knowledge in leading digital pathology biomarker development and clinical implementation

  • Familiarity with data science, clinical and drug development biomarker validation

  • Track record of successful project leadership in application development
